Friday, July 24th - Sending off the notebook

My shipping box arrived yesterday from HP, just as they said it would. Even though my hardware/hinge issue is the only thing being repaired, HP warned me to back up my hard drive just in case the technicians do a full restore. So this morning, I ran off to CompUSA and picked up a Maxtor external hard drive - "Black Armor" - with full disk encryption. $59 for 160GB - not bad!

I just finished backing up the notebook and will be signing off shortly to close the lid and pack it away for FedEx. I will attempt to update while the laptop is being repaired - but it's a little labor-intensive on an iPhone.

  1. I had a terrible problem with a tx1100 and HP did anything about it. They now those laptops are TERRIBLE and still they did nothing. It's great you are writing this blog. I wish I had read something like this before buying my old (dead) laptop. I hope nobody buys a HP laptop ever again!

  2. Our hinge also broke right after the free replacement period. I did not know your story when I contacted HP. They refused to fix it at no charge, so I had no choice but to order the parts (totalling $134.85). Now that I've seen your story, I have called, got their email address (email.ecr@hp.com) and sent them my story. We'll see what happens.

It is amazing that HP designed such crap: the display is supported by a 1/8" strip of metal on each side. When this breaks, the plastic bezel breaks, then other things might also be damaged.
